The Fifth Chakra: Finding Your Voice

“When the whole world is silent, even one voice becomes powerful.”

— Malala Yousafzai

Our voice is an integral part of our individuality and our truest form of self-expression. Our fifth chakra, or throat chakra, is responsible for both our literal and figurative voice. The throat chakra is an essential part of our communication and creativity.

The fifth chakra works in tandem with the sacral chakra, which governs creativity. Ideas are created in the sacral (2nd) chakra, but the throat chakra gives voice to those ideas, instead of stifling our individual creativity.

If you find yourself feeling unable to express your true thoughts or are feeling anxious about using your voice to make your viewpoints and thoughts known, then there could be an imbalance in your fifth chakra.

This can also manifest as a fear of public speaking or finding it difficult to communicate effectively with friends, family, and colleagues. Physically, an out-of-balance throat chakra can show up as a raspy or sore throat, ulcers in the mouth, laryngitis, or TMJ disorders.

Here are a few things you can incorporate into your daily life in order to help find a balance in your throat chakra:

  • Since this chakra is associated with the color blue, use healing crystals or wear a necklace of turquoise or aquamarine.
  • Do neck stretches to elongate your neck and open up the throat chakra.
  • Try adding the Lion’s breath exercise to your daily yoga routine. To do this, sit in a comfortable position with the tops of your hands on your knees. Inhale, then open your mouth and exhale out loud like a lion. Repeat.
  • Repeat the following affirmations daily: “I speak my truth. I live my truth.”
  • In regards to your diet, try adding some kelp or blue-green algae to your meals and cut back or eliminate dairy, which causes mucus build-up in the throat.
  • Sound is the element of the fifth chakra, so find ways to use sound in your daily routine. Incorporate singing bowls or nature sounds into your meditation or yoga routine. Or try singing in the shower!

Your voice is sacred, so use it!
