4 Reasons You’ll Feel Better Giving than Receiving

The holidays are rapidly approaching, and you know what that means…opening presents!! One common thread of almost any cultural tradition from Hanukkah to Kwanzaa to Christmas is the giving and receiving of gifts. Getting stuff feels good for sure but giving inspires you on a deeper level. Here are five things to think about:

Giving makes us happy.
Studies show that regardless of our income level or demographic, when we give to others, it produces feelings of happiness. When we give to others we find a sense of fulfillment. Teachings by the Dalai Lama and Mahatma Gandhi also show the same.

Giving feeds on itself.
When we give love or gifts to another person, it inspires them to pay it forward. Something about the feelings people get when they receive from another person makes them want to have another person feel the same way. This cycle of giving makes the world a better place to live in. Know that when you give to another person you are a part of that cycle.

You can witness the difference when giving.
Many times, you can quickly see how giving helps another person. It is an act that provides immediate gratification for both you and the receiving party. It may not even need to be a significant act that puts you out financially. Situations like this allow you to immediately see a difference in a person’s well-being.

Giving makes you feel more connected.
In today’s world, it’s easy to feel disconnected. One of the best ways to feel a bond with other people is to be in a relationship where you were able to give to them. Research actually shows that when you give to another person, you see the receiver in a more positive light and that leads to feeling more bonded with them. Giving, and ultimately receiving back from others also provides a sense of interdependence and connectedness.

Logic would tell us that getting more and more things leads to happiness, but evidence shows otherwise. As you head into this holiday season, take note of the lift of energy you get when you find the perfect gift for another person and watch their excitement as they open it. Drop off some food to a neighbor you know that may need love and support and notice how it lifts you both up. It’s a practice you can do during the holidays and all year long. Happy giving and receiving!!!
